Our patriarchal caste society celebrates a woman only during three circumstances. There are of course people actively experimenting and finding alternate support systems, but they only form a minuscule minority. While we might have numerous arguments against marriage, we cannot ignore the fact that it continues to exist as a strong institution and is able to engulf young men and women inside it, irrespective of their educational status or economic freedom.Īlso, marriage and family continue to function as the primary support system for both men and women. Marriage as an institution is built on caste and patriarchy. But before that, there are some key social realities, which we need to recognize and acknowledge. While it is important to understand why these young women made the arguments they made in the first episode, it is equally important to understand the strong backlash that has surfaced on social media to it. Several young men even went ahead and mocked the women who appeared in the show by making memes and videos filled with derogatory remarks. Parents, men, feminists and pretty much everyone were quite shocked to hear the arguments made by the young women in the show.
Expectedly, the first episode created a lot of discussion and drama, not only in the television studio but outside it as well. The young women who appeared in the show demanded from their parents a house, a car, household appliances, gold jewellery and an extravagant wedding among other things. Marriage remains a transaction between two men, bride's father and the groom.
